Writing Contest

We could all use a little diversion--I mean there's only so much Netflix one can watch, right? So...Village Books is having a writing contest! There is no entry fee and the winners get a $50 gift certificate to any store or restaurant in The Woodlands to support our local business community. PLUS the winners will be invited to read their winning entries at one of Village Books' opening events! There are three categories: 16 and under: Poetry or Flash Creative Nonfiction, 17 and older Poetry, and 17 and older Flash Creative Nonfiction. The deadline is end of day on Friday, April 3, 2020. The rules and instructions for each of the contests can be found below. Please note, you may only submit one poem or creative nonfiction piece BUT you may submit a poem AND a creative nonfiction piece. Judging will be done by local writers! Good luck!


Poetry/Flash Creative Nonfiction Contest Category: 16 and under Deadline: 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2020 Rules:

1. Poet/Author must live in Montgomery or Harris counties in Texas. 2. Poetry can be written in any poetic style and on any subject. Poetry entries must be at least 3 but cannot exceed 26 lines (including stanza breaks) and cannot exceed 55 characters per line (including spaces between words). The poem title does not count as a line. 3. Flash creative nonfiction must be 300 words or less. The title does not count in the word count. 4. The prompt for the poetry is spring. The prompt for flash creative nonfiction is community/neighborhood. 5. Poet/Author must be 16 years of age or younger at the time of submission. 6. Poet/Author may submit one poem and/or one flash creative nonfiction piece. 7. A submission in its entirety must be an original work by the person entering the contest. 8. If submissions are not written in English originally, a translation must be provided. 9. Entries may not have been published in print or online prior to submission. 10. Submissions are judged based on originality, creativity and artistic quality. 11. Minor children must have parental permission to enter the contest. 12. Under no circumstances can alterations be made to entries once entered.

Flash Creative Nonfiction Contest Category: 17 and Older Deadline: 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2020 Rules:

1. Author must live or work in Montgomery or Harris counties in Texas. 2. Flash creative nonfiction must be 300 words or less. The title does not count in the word count. 3. The prompt for flash creative nonfiction is community/neighborhood. 4. Author must be 17 years of age or older at the time of submission. 5. Author may submit only one flash creative nonfiction piece. 6. A submission in its entirety must be an original work by the person entering the contest. 7. If submissions are not written in English originally, a translation must be provided. 8. Entries may not have been published in print or online prior to submission. 9. Submissions are judged based on originality, creativity and artistic quality. 10. Under no circumstances can alterations be made to entries once entered.

Prizes: First prize is a $50 gift certificate to a store or restaurant in The Woodlands (in zip codes: 77380, 77381, 77382, 77384, 77385, 77354, 77375, 77389) of the winner’s choice. In addition, winner will be invited to read their winning entry at one of Village Books’ opening events.

Fees: There are no entry fees for any of the contests. There is no purchase necessary. There is no financial obligation to enter or win the contests.

Decisions: Judge is a published poet and a member of the local writing community. All decisions made by the judge are final.

Copyrights: The poet/author retains all copyrights to the submitted entry. Winning entry will appear on the MyVillageBooks.com website and/or social media with the copyright notice intact. By entering the contest, consent to the publication of the piece is granted if selected as a winning entry.

Notification: Winner will be notified by or before April 30, 2020. Winner will be notified by phone or email. Names of the winner may appear on the MyVillageBooks.com website and social media.

Privacy Policy: Village Books collects personal information for the purpose of notifying contest winners. All information submitted is kept confidential and used solely for notification purposes and shall not be made public by Village Books. Village Books does not lease, sell, or share personal information collected.
